AI dictation startup Wispr has closed a $280 million Series B funding round at a $2 billion valuation, with Menlo Ventures leading the investment. The company made the announcement on Monday, noting that the fresh capital will fuel its expansion into new product categories, including a recently launched meeting note-taking tool.
This latest injection brings Wispr's total funding to $361 million since its founding - a notable figure given that its previous round closed less than ten months ago. The pace of investment reflects growing investor confidence in AI-powered voice tools, even as the broader market for such products becomes increasingly crowded.
A Competitive Landscape Heating Up
The timing of this raise comes as competition in the AI dictation space intensifies. Rival applications such as Willow, Monologue, Aqua, and Superwhisper are all vying for the same user base. Beyond direct competitors, a growing number of independent developers are releasing free or low-cost dictation tools aimed at prosumers - technically savvy users who sit between casual consumers and enterprise clients. This dynamic is putting pressure on premium-tier products to justify their pricing through differentiated features and higher accuracy.
Despite the competitive environment, Wispr's existing backers remained committed. Notable Capital, NEA, Neo Ventures, 8VC, and MVP Ventures all participated again in this round. The company also attracted a fresh set of investors, including Acrew, Forerunner, Goodwater, Peak XV, Together Fund, and PLUS Capital, signaling broad confidence in the startup's direction.
Introducing Canto: A New Speech Model
Alongside the funding announcement, Wispr revealed a new underlying speech recognition model called Canto. The launch addresses a concern that had been building among its user community - in recent weeks, a number of users publicly reported a noticeable decline in the quality of transcription output from Wispr Flow, the company's flagship dictation product.
Wispr says Canto is designed to directly tackle this issue. According to the company, the new model will bring error rates down from approximately 30 percent to under 10 percent - a significant improvement that the company hopes will restore and strengthen user trust in the product's reliability.
Expanding Platforms and Geographic Reach
Since November of last year, Wispr has made meaningful strides in broadening its reach. The company launched its dictation application on Android, extending its availability beyond its initial platform. It has also scaled its sales and marketing operations in key international markets, with particular focus on India and the United Kingdom.
On the hardware side, Wispr is pursuing partnerships with device manufacturers to embed its dictation capabilities directly into wearable technology. One such partnership involves the Oasis ring, a smart ring that allows users to dictate text without needing to speak at full volume - a feature that could appeal to users in public or professional environments where speaking aloud is impractical.
Taking on the Meeting Notes Market
With its new meeting note-taking tool, Wispr is stepping into a segment already occupied by established players such as Granola, Fireflies, and Read AI. The tool currently offers meeting summaries and action item extraction, but the company has indicated there is room to expand its functionality considerably. Future development could include integrations with third-party productivity platforms, as well as the ability to automatically generate documents, update task lists, or draft emails based on meeting content.
This move signals that Wispr's ambitions extend well beyond dictation. Rather than positioning itself purely as a transcription utility, the company appears to be working toward becoming a broader voice-driven productivity platform - one that can operate across different contexts, from personal note-taking to professional collaboration.
Wispr Interface Labs and the Future of Human-Computer Interaction
Adding another layer to its expansion strategy, Wispr announced last month the formation of Wispr Interface Labs, a dedicated research and development unit led by Ariya Rastrow. Rastrow brings significant credentials to the role, having been among the early contributors to Amazon Alexa during its formative years.
The lab is tasked with exploring new paradigms for how humans interact with computers, with a particular emphasis on voice and ambient computing interfaces. While specifics about the lab's roadmap have not been disclosed, its creation suggests that Wispr is investing in longer-horizon research alongside its near-term product development. The company appears to be positioning itself not just as a tool for today's workflows, but as a contributor to how voice-driven interaction might evolve in the years ahead.
