Payments giant Stripe has reached an agreement to acquire OpenRouter, the artificial intelligence model routing startup, according to a report from Bloomberg. The deal is said to be valued at more than $7 billion, marking one of the more significant acquisitions in the AI infrastructure space to date.
OpenRouter operates as a platform that allows businesses and developers to route tasks across a range of AI models, selecting the most appropriate system based on the requirements of each specific use case, including considerations around performance and cost. The startup had been gaining considerable traction in the developer community before acquisition talks surfaced publicly.
In May, OpenRouter announced it had closed a Series B funding round worth $113 million, at a reported valuation of $1.3 billion. The round drew participation from several prominent venture capital firms, including Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures, and Capital G, the growth equity fund operated by Alphabet, Google's parent company.
A Platform Built for Flexibility Across AI Models
At the time of that funding announcement, OpenRouter CEO Alex Atallah drew a direct comparison between his company and Stripe itself. He described OpenRouter as fulfilling a similar role in the AI ecosystem that Stripe has long played in online payments - acting as a single, unified access point that connects users to multiple underlying systems without locking them into any one provider.
The company also disclosed that it had accumulated approximately 8 million users worldwide and that its platform offered access to more than 400 distinct AI models. That breadth of model coverage has been central to its appeal, particularly for developers and enterprises looking to avoid dependency on any single AI vendor.
Acquisition Talks Confirmed Last Month
The possibility of a Stripe acquisition was first reported by The Wall Street Journal last month, which indicated that the two companies were engaged in active discussions. Bloomberg's more recent reporting confirms that those negotiations have concluded and that a deal has been finalized, with the acquisition price exceeding $7 billion - a figure that represents a substantial premium over OpenRouter's last known valuation.
When contacted for comment, a Stripe spokesperson declined to address the report directly, stating that the company does not comment on rumors or speculation. OpenRouter has not issued a public statement at the time of writing.
Strategic Fit for Stripe's Expanding Ambitions
The acquisition, if confirmed officially, would represent a notable strategic pivot for Stripe, which has historically focused on payment processing infrastructure for businesses of all sizes. Bringing OpenRouter into its portfolio would give Stripe a foothold in the rapidly growing AI infrastructure market, where demand for model-agnostic routing and access management tools has been climbing steadily alongside the broader adoption of large language models and generative AI systems.
The deal also underscores the increasing convergence between financial technology platforms and AI tooling, as companies across both sectors look for ways to embed intelligent systems into their core product offerings. For Stripe, acquiring a platform that already serves millions of developers and supports hundreds of AI models could accelerate its ability to offer AI-native services to its existing merchant and developer base.
OpenRouter's positioning as a neutral aggregator - one that routes requests across competing AI providers rather than championing any single model - aligns closely with the kind of infrastructure-layer role that Stripe has long occupied in the payments world. That philosophical overlap may have been a key factor in bringing the two companies together.
