Meta's Muse Reaches 10 Million US Downloads in 40 Days Joining Elite App Club

Meta's artificial intelligence companion app, Muse, has joined a very small group of mobile applications by crossing 10 million downloads in the United States within just 40 days of its launch. According to data published by mobile market intelligence firm Sensor Tower, Muse recorded 10.9 million total downloads since its September release, with 10.2 million of those coming from U.S. users alone.
The achievement places Muse among only 12 apps in history to have hit this particular post-launch threshold within the same timeframe. Kara Lee, Senior Insights Analyst at Sensor Tower, noted that the most recent app to have accomplished this before Muse was Meta's own Threads, which crossed that mark back in July 2023. Lee also pointed out that the majority of other apps to have reached this level of early-stage scale were mobile games rather than utility or AI-driven applications.
Meta's Cross-Platform Advantage
A significant factor behind Muse's rapid adoption is Meta's well-established ability to promote new products across its existing ecosystem of platforms. The company deployed a similar strategy with Threads, which was built directly on top of Instagram's social graph and later had its content woven into both Facebook and Instagram feeds. Muse has benefited from the same promotional machinery, gaining visibility across a family of apps that now collectively serves approximately 3.6 billion daily active users.
Beyond organic promotion through its own platforms, Meta has also committed substantial paid advertising resources to push Muse into the mainstream. Sensor Tower's data shows that Meta directed 39% of its total advertising spend toward Muse in October, a notable jump from the 23% allocated in September. As a result of that investment, Muse now ranks as the 21st largest brand in the United States by advertising impressions for October, having climbed from 73rd place just one month earlier.
Retention Rates Outperform AI Rivals
Driving downloads through marketing is one challenge; keeping users engaged after the initial curiosity fades is an entirely different one. On that front, Muse appears to be performing well ahead of its direct competitors in the AI app space, including ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok.
According to Sensor Tower's figures, Muse achieved a 7-day retention rate of 30% and a 14-day retention rate of 23% among U.S. users. In comparison, its AI competitors averaged a 19% retention rate at the 7-day mark and a 16% retention rate at 14 days. These figures suggest that users who download Muse are more likely to continue using it regularly compared to those who download competing AI applications.
The app also crossed a meaningful engagement milestone on October 16, when its daily active users reached 2.5 million for the first time - representing a 15% increase week-over-week. That figure points to a growing base of users who are interacting with the app on a consistent basis, not simply downloading and abandoning it.
How Muse Stacks Up Against ChatGPT and Others
Muse's early performance looks particularly strong when placed side-by-side with other AI apps that have launched in recent years. ChatGPT, widely considered the dominant player in the consumer AI space, accumulated 3.7 million U.S. downloads in its first 40 days on the market. Grok and Claude trailed considerably further behind, with Grok reaching around 500,000 U.S. downloads and Claude just 200,000 downloads over the same initial period.
On a global scale, ChatGPT did outpace Muse, having reached approximately 15 million downloads worldwide within its first 40 days. However, that comparison comes with an important caveat: Muse is currently only available in the United States and Canada, while ChatGPT's app was accessible to users across a broad range of international markets from the start. Countries such as Japan, Brazil, and Germany contributed meaningfully to ChatGPT's global install numbers, with Japan alone accounting for roughly 25% of its worldwide downloads during that initial 40-day window. Given these geographic constraints, Muse's performance is considered especially notable by analysts.
Holding the Top Spot on App Stores
Since its launch, Muse has maintained a near-uninterrupted hold on the top position in the U.S. App Store rankings. The only exception came on October 19, when live-streaming platform Kick briefly displaced it from the number one slot. Muse has since reclaimed that position and, as of this past Tuesday, continues to rank first. The app has also held the top spot on Google Play throughout the past 30 days, indicating strong and consistent demand across both major mobile platforms.
Designed to handle a wide variety of tasks on behalf of users, Muse represents Meta's most visible push yet into the consumer AI assistant market. Its early trajectory - from a rapid climb to the top of app store charts to download figures that surpass nearly every AI app that has come before it in the U.S. market - suggests the company's investment in both product development and aggressive marketing is producing measurable results in the short term. Whether that momentum holds as the app matures and the novelty effect diminishes remains the central question for the months ahead.
