A Florida-based cybersecurity firm has secured a major funding injection to scale its bot detection capabilities, with Spur Intelligence announcing a $200 million investment round led by Insight Partners.
Spur Intelligence, headquartered in Lake Mary, Florida, was founded in 2017 by two engineers who previously worked for the United States Department of Defense. That founding date is notable - the company was building its core technology a full five years before ChatGPT became publicly available, placing it well ahead of the broader industry conversation around automated and AI-generated traffic. The company's platform is designed to help businesses and enterprises tell the difference between genuine human users and bot traffic that has grown increasingly sophisticated and difficult to detect, enabling organizations to identify fraudulent accounts and potential security threats.
A Growing Blind Spot in Online Security
Thomas Krane of Insight Partners described the problem Spur is addressing as a critical gap in how organizations currently understand online activity. In a written statement accompanying the funding announcement, Krane noted that the rapid spread of criminal VPN services, residential proxy networks, and anonymization tools has left many organizations in a difficult position - they can observe suspicious behavior on their networks, but lack the ability to trace or understand the underlying infrastructure driving it.
Combating malicious automated traffic is not a new challenge for corporate security teams. However, the scale and complexity of the problem have reached an unprecedented level. According to a report published last month by internet infrastructure company Cloudflare, bots now account for more internet activity than humans - a threshold that, as of mid-2026, has been crossed for the first time in the history of the internet.
Bot Traffic Surpasses Human Activity Online
Cloudflare founder and chief executive Matthew Prince commented on the milestone via a post on X, acknowledging that the tipping point arrived sooner than the company had anticipated. Prince noted that earlier projections had placed the crossover point at the end of 2027, later revised to early 2027, but that the rapid growth of so-called agentic traffic - automated systems acting on behalf of users or operating independently - had accelerated the timeline significantly. His post pointed to Cloudflare's latest traffic analysis as the basis for the finding.
The convergence of these trends - the explosion of AI-driven automation, the proliferation of anonymization tools, and the now-confirmed dominance of bot traffic online - positions Spur Intelligence in a market where demand for its technology is likely to intensify. The $200 million raised in this round is expected to support the company's efforts to expand its detection platform and grow its enterprise customer base as organizations seek better tools to understand and respond to the increasingly complex landscape of online traffic.
