Generative AI has made it easier than ever to produce content at scale, but that same productivity surge has created a new problem: keeping track of everything. As videos, audio recordings, meeting transcripts, and documents pile up on hard drives and cloud storage, major technology companies including Adobe, Apple, and Google have begun building AI-powered search tools to help users locate their own files. Whether this capability will give rise to a distinct software category or simply become a built-in feature of existing platforms remains an open question.
One startup is wagering that a standalone product can carve out a durable position in this space. Clipto, a San Francisco-based company with additional teams in Singapore and Hong Kong, has closed a $15 million all-equity funding round at a post-money valuation of $250 million. The round drew participation from HSG (formerly known as Sequoia China), GL Ventures, EnvisionX Capital, Palm Drive Capital, Hans Tung, Lu Zhang, and 522 Ventures.
Clipto's core product indexes video, audio, images, meeting recordings, and other files stored locally on a user's computer. Rather than manually browsing through folder structures to locate a specific clip or document, users can describe what they are looking for in plain language. The platform also supports queries through external AI assistants, including OpenAI's ChatGPT and Anthropic's Claude, allowing those tools to surface relevant files from a user's indexed library.
A Founder with Two Decades of Relevant Work
Clipto's founder, Henry Kang, has spent the better part of twenty years working on problems closely related to what his current company is trying to solve. While pursuing a PhD at Carnegie Mellon University in 2006, Kang worked on robotics systems that could record their surroundings, identify objects within those environments, and recall where specific items were located. That foundational work on spatial memory and object recognition would inform much of what came after.
Kang went on to apply similar thinking to his first startup, which used artificial intelligence to catalog clothing in a user's wardrobe and generate outfit suggestions. His second venture, Zenvideo, tackled the challenge of simplifying video production. That company was acquired by Chinese technology giant Tencent in 2020.
"The real insight is that in this AI era, we don't have a content shortage. The opposite is true. We have too much content. We have too much video footage sitting on our computers that isn't being used."
That observation became the founding premise of Clipto, which Kang launched in 2023 alongside several colleagues from his previous startup. At a moment when most AI companies were racing to build tools that generate new content, Clipto took a different approach - focusing on helping users find and reuse material they had already created but could no longer easily locate.
From Video Creators to a Broader User Base
Clipto initially built its product with video creators in mind - specifically those managing footage spread across multiple computers and external hard drives. That audience remains part of the company's user base, but it now represents only about a quarter to a third of total users. The platform has since attracted a much wider range of professionals, including lawyers, physicians, researchers, marketers, human resources staff, professors, and students.
The company reports that more than 30 million people have used its products since launch, and that it currently counts hundreds of thousands of paying subscribers. Kang declined to share a more specific subscriber figure or break down average revenue per customer, though he noted that a meaningful share of paying users have remained subscribed for more than two years - a sign of sustained engagement rather than short-term experimentation.
Clipto entered 2026 with $15 million in annual recurring revenue and says it is profitable on a net-income basis. The company employs just over 20 people, distributed across the San Francisco Bay Area, Hong Kong, and Singapore.
Local Processing and MCP Integration
Approximately two weeks before this funding announcement, Clipto added support for the Model Context Protocol, commonly referred to as MCP. This is an emerging standard that enables AI applications to connect with and retrieve data from external sources. MCP support allows tools like ChatGPT and Claude to query a user's Clipto-indexed file library directly.
Kang emphasized that privacy and user control are central to how this integration works. Accessing indexed files requires an explicit request and authorization from the user. When an AI application queries Clipto's data, it can only retrieve information within the scope the user has defined. Notably, all of this processing takes place locally on the user's own hardware, without routing data through cloud servers - a design choice that distinguishes Clipto from many competing services that depend on cloud-based infrastructure.
Competing Against Larger Platforms
Clipto is entering a market where established technology companies already hold significant advantages in both data access and user trust. Adobe Premiere already includes AI-powered search capabilities within its professional video editing suite. Apple Photos and Google Photos both allow users to search their personal photo and video libraries using natural-language descriptions.
Kang argues that Clipto offers something those platforms do not. While Adobe, Apple, and Google tend to search within files stored inside their own respective ecosystems, Clipto is designed to work across multiple file types - video, audio, images, and documents - regardless of where those files are stored. The platform also enables users to make their indexed content available to third-party AI tools, something the larger platforms do not currently support in the same way.
Clipto's competitive bet is that combining cross-format search, local processing, and AI agent integration into a single product will be enough to attract and retain users who would otherwise rely on the built-in tools offered by larger companies. Whether that combination proves sufficient to justify a standalone subscription in the long run is the core question the company will need to answer as the market matures.
How the New Funding Will Be Used
Kang said the $15 million raised in this round will be directed toward two primary areas. The first is improving the AI models and computing infrastructure required to run Clipto efficiently on consumer-grade hardware, which is essential given the company's commitment to local processing. The second is expanding integrations with additional AI agents and platforms, broadening the range of tools that can access a user's indexed file library through Clipto's system.
As the volume of digital content generated by individuals and organizations continues to grow, the challenge of locating and reusing existing material is likely to become more acute rather than less. Clipto is positioning itself as the layer that sits between a user's file system and the AI tools they rely on daily - a role that could prove valuable if the company can maintain its early momentum and hold its ground against larger competitors moving into the same space.
