Nvidia has committed $3.5 billion to Taiwanese semiconductor company MediaTek in a wide-ranging partnership that will embed Nvidia's technology into MediaTek's custom chip design business. Under the terms of the deal, MediaTek will gain access to Nvidia's infrastructure tools, enabling it to build purpose-built chips for artificial intelligence companies and large-scale cloud operators - chips that can be directly integrated into data centers already running on Nvidia hardware.
The agreement arrives at a pivotal moment in the AI chip industry. A growing number of AI developers and major cloud platforms - including Amazon, Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Anthropic - have been channeling significant resources into designing their own silicon. The motivation is straightforward: reducing dependence on Nvidia's graphics processing units. By striking deals like this one, Nvidia is effectively acknowledging that shift while simultaneously ensuring its broader infrastructure remains central to how those custom chips operate.
"Nvidia is an AI infrastructure company," said Dion Harris, Nvidia's senior director of HPC and AI hyperscaler infrastructure solutions, speaking to reporters on Monday. "We expanded beyond pure computing chips years ago."
A Pattern of Strategic Investment
This deal fits a broader pattern that has defined Nvidia's investment strategy in recent years. The chip giant has repeatedly backed companies that, in turn, deepen their integration with Nvidia's own ecosystem. The MediaTek partnership is no exception. A central feature of the agreement is MediaTek's access to Nvidia's NVLink Fusion ecosystem - a technology framework that allows chips from any manufacturer, not just Nvidia, to communicate rapidly with one another within a shared infrastructure.
Just days before the MediaTek announcement, Nvidia disclosed a comparable arrangement with Amazon Web Services. That deal, which did not include a direct financial investment, will see AWS deploy an additional two million Nvidia GPUs across its infrastructure while also adopting NVLink Fusion.
Harris elaborated on how the MediaTek partnership expands Nvidia's reach. "Basically, every cloud, every model builder is deploying our platform in some shape, form, or fashion," he said. "So by MediaTek being able to offer this extension to its customers, it allows them to standardize on the rack-scale infrastructure across their AI factories and also deploy their custom chips right alongside those using the same standard platform."
He added: "This is really about opening up this ecosystem to the entire MediaTek customer base."
MediaTek's Custom Chip Ambitions
MediaTek has not disclosed the names of the cloud companies or AI laboratories it works with on custom chip development, but Nvidia's investment signals a clear intent to accelerate that segment of MediaTek's business - provided Nvidia remains embedded in the process. MediaTek has been steadily expanding its custom data center ASIC (application-specific integrated circuit) operations. In June, the company projected that this business line would generate $2 billion in revenue by 2026, with ambitions to capture a larger portion of the market in subsequent years.
With Nvidia's backing, MediaTek will be positioned to offer its cloud and AI customers a path to building workload-specific chips that still operate within Nvidia's "proven scale-up and scale-out technology stack and ecosystem" and its "rack-scale architecture," according to the companies.
Beyond Data Centers: Consumer Devices and Automotive
The partnership extends well beyond the data center. MediaTek has long been a dominant force in developing chips that power smartphones, smart home devices, automobiles, and wireless communications infrastructure. That expertise will now be applied in collaboration with Nvidia on DGX Spark, Nvidia's compact desktop AI computer aimed at developers. The two companies have also extended their work together to the RTX Spark, which represents Nvidia's push to bring its AI capabilities into consumer-grade AI personal computers.
The automotive sector is another significant area of overlap. According to a joint press release, MediaTek and Nvidia will continue "developing platforms for AI-powered, software-defined vehicles in the era of physical AI." MediaTek's automotive platforms already incorporate Nvidia's RTX graphics technology for intelligent in-vehicle cockpit experiences, and they operate in tandem with Nvidia Drive AGX, the company's in-car computing platform designed for autonomous driving applications.
Nvidia's Broader Vision
Jensen Huang, Nvidia's founder and chief executive, framed the partnership as part of a larger strategy to extend Nvidia's accelerated computing technology across an increasingly wide range of platforms and markets.
"AI is transforming every computing platform - from the world's largest AI factories to the PC and the car. Together, we're building platforms that bring Nvidia accelerated computing to new markets and give customers the freedom to create differentiated AI systems at enormous scale."
The deal reflects how Nvidia is navigating a rapidly shifting competitive landscape. Rather than resisting the move by major technology companies toward custom silicon, Nvidia is positioning itself as the connective tissue that binds those custom chips into a unified, scalable infrastructure - one that continues to run on Nvidia's foundational technology regardless of who designs the chips sitting inside it.
