South Korean memory chip manufacturer SK Hynix, a direct competitor to both Samsung and U.S.-based Micron Technology, announced on Monday that it intends to sell approximately 17.8 million shares through a U.S. initial public offering. If the offering performs as well as early indicators suggest, the company stands to raise roughly $28 billion, a figure derived from SK Hynix's closing share price on the Seoul stock exchange last Friday.
Rather than listing ordinary shares directly on a U.S. exchange, SK Hynix will offer American depositary receipts, commonly known as ADRs. These are financial instruments that allow investors based in the United States to gain exposure to a foreign-listed company without needing to trade on an overseas market. In this case, each ADR will represent one-tenth of a single common share. The company is expected to finalize pricing on Thursday, with trading set to begin the following day, Friday.
AI Demand Driving Record Growth in Memory
Much like its U.S. counterpart Micron Technology, SK Hynix has been a significant beneficiary of the surge in demand tied to artificial intelligence infrastructure. The company reported that its first-quarter revenues climbed nearly 200% compared to the same period a year earlier. Its stock price has risen approximately 260% so far this year alone - a remarkable run that reflects the broader frenzy around AI-related hardware.
The underlying reason for this surge is straightforward: AI systems are extraordinarily memory-intensive. That growth has been driven by record revenues tied directly to AI-related memory demand - a trajectory that has made the sector one of the most closely watched in the technology investment landscape.
